Starting January 1, 2026, the third adjustment period of the FuelEU Maritime Regulation and EU ETS will commence, as part of the “Fit for 55” package (EU Directive 2023/959). These regulations aim to reduce the environmental footprint of the maritime industry by limiting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
From 2026, shipping companies will be required to cover 100% of their emissions through the purchase of emission allowances, compared to 70% in 2025. The FuelEU Maritime Regulation sets a gradual reduction of emissions from fuels used in shipping, targeting a 2% reduction in 2025 and up to 80% by 2050.
Emission coverage percentages per year:
- 40% for emissions from 01.01.2024
- 70% for emissions from 01.01.2025
- 100% for emissions from 01.01.2026
As of January 11, 2026, the “ETS & FUEL EU SURCHARGE” will apply to freight vehicle tickets per route on Adriatic lines, will be adjusted as follows:
